A waterfront city with a dozen different waters
St. Petersburg isn't one waterfront — it's many. The grand bayfront downtown. The winding bayous of Snell Isle and Shore Acres with their historic seawalls. Coffee Pot Bayou's bird-filled shallows. The open Boca Ciega Bay on the west side. The canals of the northeast neighborhoods. Each one asks something different from a dock, and a builder who treats them all the same will get some of them wrong.
The bayous are the signature St. Pete water: narrow, winding, lined with seawalls of widely varying age, and home to manatees, dolphins, and more birdlife than seems possible in a city. Bayou docks need to respect the neighbors — low profiles, quiet construction, and designs that fit the historic character of streets where the seawalls went in generations ago.
Old seawalls, strict permits
Two things define St. Pete dock work: aging seawalls and thorough permitting. Many of the city's seawalls date to the original developments, and we assess the wall as part of every dock project — a beautiful new dock on a failing wall is a liability. The city's permitting is real and detailed; we prepare complete applications with proper drawings, which is the difference between approval and months of back-and-forth.
On the open-bay side — the west-facing shores along Boca Ciega Bay — exposure is the factor. Afternoon sea breezes build real chop, so these docks get the heavy-weather treatment: deeper pilings, serious bracing, and deck heights set for surge. It's a different build than a sheltered bayou dock, and we price and design accordingly.
